Can You Get an MRI or Go Through Security with Permanent Jewelry?

This is one of the first things people ask about before their first permanent jewelry appointment, and it's an easy one to put to rest.

Airport security and metal detectors

Permanent jewelry is not an issue at airport security or with standard metal detectors. The pieces are small and worn just like any other jewelry — you won't be stopped or asked to remove them.

MRIs

MRI machines use strong magnets, and most medical facilities ask patients to remove all metal jewelry beforehand as a standard precaution. If you have an MRI scheduled, call and ask if you must remove permanent jewelry or if it can be taped over with medical tape.

How to remove it before a scan or surgery

Removing permanent jewelry is simple: a small pair of scissors or clippers can snip the jump ring at the weld point. It only takes a second, and it won't damage the piece.

Getting it back on afterward

Bring the piece back to I Shine Forever and we'll re-weld it for you. We offer one complimentary re-weld if your piece was removed for a verified medical reason, whether that's an MRI, surgery, or another procedure.

Planning ahead

If you know you have a scan or procedure coming up, it's smart to remove the piece yourself a day or two ahead of time rather than at the hospital, so you're not scrambling. If you have questions about a specific procedure, your doctor's office can confirm their policy on jewelry.
