Permanent Jewelry Aftercare Guide

One of the best parts of permanent jewelry is that there's almost nothing to do to take care of it — no clasp to lose, no chain to remember to put on. Still, a few simple habits will help your piece stay shiny and secure for years. Here's what we tell every client at I Shine Forever in Fort Myers Beach.

Rinse after salt water and pools

Southwest Florida living means a lot of beach days and pool time, and quality metals like gold-filled, sterling silver, and solid gold handle that well. That said, a quick rinse with fresh water after ocean swims or chlorinated pools helps prevent buildup and keeps the metal looking its best over time.

Clean it like you would any fine jewelry

A gentle wipe with a soft cloth, or an occasional soak in warm water with a mild jewelry cleaner, is all it takes. Avoid harsh chemicals, strong perfumes sprayed directly on the piece, and abrasive scrubbing.

Be mindful during workouts and heavy activity

Permanent jewelry is designed for everyday wear, including exercise. Just be aware of snagging on gym equipment, tight clothing, or activities with a lot of hand-to-hand contact, since any welded chain can catch and bend under enough force.

If it stretches or the weld comes apart

With normal wear, chains can occasionally stretch or a weld can come apart over time — this is normal for fine jewelry and easy to fix. Bring your piece back and we'll take a look and re-weld it for you.

Removing it for an MRI, surgery, or a break

Need it off for a medical procedure or just want a break? A small pair of scissors or clippers can snip the jump ring at the weld point. Save the piece and we'll re-weld it back on for you — we offer one complimentary re-weld if it's removed for a verified medical reason. Read more on our MRI and metal detector guide.

Questions about your specific piece?

Every metal and chain style behaves a little differently. If you're not sure how to care for yours, email us, text (239) 361-5757, or ask at your next visit — we're always happy to help.
